Empower Your Voice: Cast Your Vote for the Future of Freelancers Union Board Representation

"Empower Your Voice: Cast Your Vote for the Future of Freelancers Union Board Representation"

Freelancers Union is dedicated to serving the interests of independent workers and relies on member participation to shape the future of the organization. As a Freelancers Union member, your input is crucial in selecting the next Member Representative to join the board.

The Member Representative will have the same responsibilities as other board members and play a vital role in developing the organization’s future strategy. Take a look at the three candidates for the next Member Representative and cast your vote here:

**1. How would you use your role as Member Representative to advocate on behalf of members?**

**Bryan:**
The Freelancers Union has already laid a strong foundation for independent workers. Unions not only benefit their members but also raise the standards for everyone. Cities and states with active union activity have higher wages and better benefits across industries, regardless of union membership. As a Member Representative, I would focus on three priorities:

1. **Unemployment benefits for freelancers:** Freelancers deserve the option to pay into and collect unemployment, just like employees. I would push for state-level legislation in more states and build grassroots freelancer campaigns to apply pressure where it matters.

2. **Stronger payment protections:** Freelancers shouldn’t have to wait months to get paid. We need legal consequences for non-payment and a Union-backed mediation system that freelancers can use when clients stall.

3. **A vetted freelancer job board:** Many job postings lead to lowball offers or delayed payment. We need a trusted Union-run platform where only companies with fair pay and contracts can post gigs.

Advocating for freelancers should be a collaborative effort, with freelancers driving the agenda. This can be achieved through quarterly town halls, a public advocacy tracker, and clearer communication about wins and actions.

**Diesha:**
As the Member Representative, I will leverage my connections to drive policy changes that directly benefit freelancers. I will work towards stronger legal protections and greater recognition from the Department of Labor.

**Marie:**
Having been a freelancer for over a decade and an official member of the Freelancers Union, I understand the unique challenges and needs of independent workers. If elected as the Member Representative, I would leverage my experience and dedication to advocate for our members in the following ways:

– Create accessible feedback channels to ensure diverse perspectives are heard.
– Advocate for policy changes that protect freelancer rights.
– Enhance and create member resources to adapt to the changing freelance landscape.
– Promote transparency and accountability within the board.

**2. What are some issues you would like to focus on as a Member Representative?**

**Bryan:**
Having experienced the loss of a major freelance client, I understand the importance of diversifying and protecting our businesses. My focus would be on:

– **Unemployment benefits for freelancers:** Freelancers should have safety nets just like traditional workers. The Union should work at the state level to build inclusive unemployment insurance programs for freelancers.
– **Stronger contract enforcement and legal support:** We need free or low-cost legal consultations, a legal referral network, and training on contract negotiations.
– **Transparent rates and business education:** Freelancers should know their worth and charge accordingly. We need rate transparency and more expert-led business training.
– **Defending DEI in freelancing:** We must track the impact of rollbacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion and create support systems for freelancers from marginalized communities.

**Diesha:**
I would focus on:

– **Fair Rates & Pricing Education:** Equipping freelancers with tools and training to confidently price their work and negotiate with clients.
– **Stronger Contracts & Legal Protections:** Helping freelancers have better contracts that protect their time, work, and payments.
– **Business Growth & Sustainability:** Assisting freelancers in building profitable and sustainable businesses.

**Marie:**
In addition to addressing current issues such as healthcare benefits, retirement plans, inconsistent pay, and professional development, I would focus on potential emerging issues freelancers might face in the future, such as AI job displacement, freelance platform changes, and economic fluctuations.

**3. How do you handle problematic clients, and what is your advice to others?**

**Bryan:**
To handle problematic clients, it’s essential to start with a contract that protects you. Follow up professionally and escalate when needed. Make non-paying companies public knowledge. Freelancers should never have to beg for their own paychecks.

**Diesha:**
I approach problematic clients with clear boundaries and firm expectations. Setting expectations early through strong contracts and clear communication prevents many issues. Prioritize facts over emotions and keep records of conversations, agreements, and invoices. If necessary, don’t be afraid to walk away from a toxic situation.

**Marie:**
Avoiding problematic clients is crucial. Develop clear agreements and client expectation documents. Position yourself as a strong, independent business owner. Protect yourself from the start with a solid contract and a well-defined list of expectations. Maintain a business mindset and deter those who might try to take advantage.

**5. When I’m not freelancing, I am…**

**Bryan:**
Traveling the country with my wife and our dog in our campervan. Freelancing gives us the freedom to explore new places and build a home life that matters. And of course, enjoying a good bottle of wine.

**Diesha:**
Trying out new restaurants, cooking for friends, and enjoying outdoor activities like kayaking and paddleboarding.

**Marie:**
Spending time with family, playing sports, line dancing, and embarking on new adventures.

**6. What is the number one song on your playlist?**

**Bryan:**
My top played song for 2024 was Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. But when I’m writing, I enjoy jazz. Freelancing and jazz share similarities in structure and improvisation.

**Diesha:**
“Unstoppable” by Sia because it resonates with my journey of resilience.

**Marie:**
“I’m Her” by Natalie Jane.

**7. What else would you want members to know about yourself?**

**Bryan:**
Freelancing wasn’t part of my original plan, but it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. I’m here to help fix the challenges freelancers face and create a sustainable path for independent workers.

**Diesha:**
I started my career in a family business and transitioned to freelancing. I bring business strategies to help freelancers build sustainable, profitable companies. I’m passionate about fostering strong communities among independent workers.

**Marie:**
I firmly believe in the power and potential of the freelance career. I’m committed to advocating for freelancers and creating a legislative environment where independent professionals can thrive. I value open communication and building strong relationships.

**Candidate Bios:**

**Bryan:**
Bryan Driscoll is a non-practicing lawyer, HR consultant, and legal content writer. He helps businesses navigate workplace challenges, coaches individual workers, and crafts authoritative content for law firms and legal publications.

**Diesha:**

**Marie:**
