AirTags are primarily marketed for items like purses, keys, and travel bags. However, there are numerous creative uses for them, as seen in examples shared by users on platforms like Reddit. For instance, some users have attached AirTags to their dog collars and trained their dogs to come back whenever they press the “play sound” feature. The AirTag works by utilizing Apple’s network of iOS devices to create a Bluetooth tracker. This means that anyone with an iPhone or iPad becomes part of the iOS network, and if they come within Bluetooth range of your AirTag, its last known location will be displayed on your Find My app.
PCMag’s “excellent” review of the AirTag highlights the features of the Find My app, including a screen that acts like a compass, pointing you in the direction of your AirTag and displaying the distance between you and the device. Additionally, there is an option to play a sound, which is useful for locating misplaced items like remotes.
When the AirTag is more than 30 feet away from your phone, the network of iOS users comes into play. However, when the AirTag is within 30 feet, it uses your own Bluetooth connection. Apple has implemented security measures, including end-to-end encryption, to ensure that only you have access to the location of your AirTag. The batteries of AirTags last approximately a year and are replaceable. Unlike competitors such as Tile or Chipolo for Android users, there is no monthly charge for AirTags.
