Renovations are still in progress at Portland International Airport (PDX) as part of a comprehensive $2.15 billion renovation project. The Port of Portland unveiled the new main terminal last year, but the remaining 30% of renovations are still underway. The goal of this project is to enhance the airport’s infrastructure and accommodate 35 million passengers annually by 2045.
The current phase of the project is primarily focused on improving the airport’s accessibility and navigation. Renowned Portland-based architecture and design firms, Ankrom Moisan and ZGF, have contributed their expertise to the project. This expansion is the most ambitious in PDX’s history, effectively doubling the airport’s capacity.
An interesting aspect of the renovation is the emphasis on sustainable materials. The roof, as well as wood concessions, flooring, and feature walls, have been sourced entirely from within a 300-mile radius. This includes materials from small family-owned forests, nonprofits, and tribal nations, totaling 3.5 million board feet of wood. This commitment to local sourcing not only supports the regional economy but also promotes environmental sustainability.
The ongoing renovations at Portland International Airport are set to transform the airport into a modern and efficient hub for travelers. With its focus on accessibility, sustainability, and capacity expansion, PDX is poised to meet the growing demands of air travel in the coming years.
